The Jazz Centre UK launched its "Caribbean Influence on Jazz" exhibition on June 22nd, in celebration of Windrush Day, in partnership with the Windrush and Jazz Appreciation society. Award-winning vocalist Elaine Delmar led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, honouring the Windrush generation's impact on British jazz. Running through October 26th to mark Black History month, the event celebrated the rich cultural contributions of Caribbean immigrants and descendants to British music and culture. Notable attendees included Denize Ledeatte, Director of The National Windrush Museum, along with diverted attendees from the cancelled Tilbury Windrush commemoration day. The exhibition features historically significant artifacts such as rare memorabilia, music, and photographs, showcasing the Caribbean musicians and bandleaders who shaped the British Jazz scene.
Further enhancing the exhibition, The Jazz Centre UK is excited to offer a series of activities designed to enhance visitors’ experiences. On Sunday July 6th, acclaimed bassist Yolanda Charles MBE presents "A Conversation with Bassist Yolanda Charles," discussing the influence of Caribbean culture on her music. As a first-generation Caribbean descendant, Yolanda - who has worked with rock icons including Mick Jagger, Paul Weller, Sting ‘Squeeze’ and Van Morrison as well as legendary film producer Hans Zimmer – will play the bass, talk about her musical experiences and how her Caribbean heritage has informed her musical career. Additionally, Elaine Delmar will perform live in concert as part of "Spike’s Place Presents," 30th August, with an all-star trio.
The success of "Caribbean Influence on Jazz" serves as a promising launch pad for a rotation of exhibition events, collaborative efforts and community initiatives. The charity welcomes new volunteers and local enthusiasts who may be eager to contribute to exhibition planning in the future.

“Caribbean culture is an integral part of modern Britain, and I am delighted to utilize our platform at The Jazz Centre UK to offer the communities of Southend and Essex a distinctive insight into its impact. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated volunteers for making this possible”
Kevin Buck, CEO said:
“Not only am I excited and proud that The Jazz Centre UK has put on this very informative and culturally important exhibition, but I can think of no one better to give us their inciteful knowledge and personal experience than Yolanda. I very much look forward to hearing more about how Yolanda’s ancestral culture has influenced her music on Sunday 6th July and hope many will also seize the opportunity to visit the Jazz Centre UK and hear for themselves”
