THE JAZZ CENTRE UK QR CODE TOUR
Contemporary Jazz
Jazz now continues to flourish —as it always has done— in any variety of styles.
New stars like Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross, Shabaka Hutchings, Cassie Kinoshi, and Shirley Tetteh —many of them graduates of Janine Irons’ and Gary Crosby’s Tomorrow’s Warriors— continue to break down the barriers around jazz. New groups like Ezra Collective, Sons of Kemet, Kokoroko, SEED Ensemble, Nérija, and Snarky Puppy continue to explore the combined vocabularies of jazz, rock, Caribbean and African music to huge audiences. Manchester has its own spiritual jazz scene, inspired by the modal music of John and Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. Best known practitioner, trumpeter Matthew Halsall, records on his own Gondwana label.
Meantime artists like Alan Barnes, Simon Spillett, Pete Long, Bruce Adams, Tina May and Dave Newton continue to profitably explore the classic traditions of jazz on record and in person. It’s all music —so listen and enjoy!
