Ron Mathewson

"His contribution to music will be remembered and the stories and anecdotes about him will be spoken of and repeated for years to come." - Dave Holland (Double Bassist)

Rognuald ‘Ron’ Andrew Mathewson (1944 - 2020) was a Jazz Double Bassist and Bass Guitarist. He played the piano from early childhood and double bass from the age of 15. Just two years later at the age of 17 Mathewson travelled to Germany for 5 months to work with trombonist Ken Ramage’s Dixielanders.

Mathewson then joined the Clyde Valley Stompers in late 1962 until they disbanded in 1964. Mathewson has worked with Fat John Cox’s band, Alex Welsh, Tubby Hayes, Ray Russell Quartet, Stan Tracye, Philly Joe Jones and within Ronnie Scott’s Octet; not to mention the many visiting jazz stars he accompanied through the 1970s and 80s.

From 1977 Mathewson performed regularly with Ronnie Scott until early 1992. Through this period he also appeared with Charlie Watts’ Big Band (1985 - 1986) and led occasional groups too with the likes of Alan Skidmore, John Taylor, Dick Pearce and Spike Wells.
