About the Event
Presentation / Q&A / meet and greet - 12:30 PM - 2 PM
Hollywood biopics of jazz legends have tended to get jazz wrong most of the time. But in what ways should a feature film represent the jazz musician in an authentic way on the screen? In the case of a biopic there is some requirement for authenticity, being based on the real-life of a jazz artist but how far can we veer from the truth and still remain authentic? Can we improvise a little? after all improvisation is at the heart of jazz. Selwyn Harris explores these issues by looking at traditional melodramas such as The Benny Goodman Story through to very recent biopics from Miles Ahead to Lowdown.
Then from 2 PM
A Jazz Centre Film Club review of the film follows the presentation at 2 PM. All are welcome to join.
