About the Event
Born 1934 in Cape Town, pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim, initially known as Dollar Brand, absorbed a rich variety of musical influences, leading to the formation of the ground-breaking Jazz Epistles, who recorded the first South African jazz LP. Moving to Europe in the early 60s, he was supported by Duke Ellington and went to America, before returning to Africa in 1970. For six decades he has performed all over the world, achieving the status of a respected elder statesman of jazz, and a representative of black South African creativity and freedom.
Brand Nu Dolla are a sextet formed by South African saxophonist Dillon Woods, dedicated to the musical legacy of Abdullah Ibrahim. Its other members are Rianna Henriques (alto, flute), Raph Clarkson (trombone), Kyle Osborne (piano), Aiyanna Rennie (bass) and Chris Chikanwah (drums).
