In 1918 James Reese Europe, an officer in the US 389th "Hellfighters" Artillery Battalion led his Army Band on a 2000 mile tour of France and made recordings for Pathe. Their presence, and their renderings of "Memphis Blues" generated a ragtime mania. And that was the start of French Jazz
