About the Event

John Surman, whose compositions Mick Foster is playing today at the JCUK, is one of Britain's greatest jazz talents of the last half-century: emerging in the '60's with the Mike Westbrook Band, Surman has been recognised as an outstanding baritone saxophonist, composer, bandleader and performer, with a wide-ranging discography full of distinctive and original projects, many of them on the foremost European label, ECM.

Mick Foster is himself one of our finest baritone saxophonists, and very familiar to JCUK audiences playing his own compositions and those of his hero Gerry Mulligan. Today he will explore the Surman repertoire - including Extrapolation, Surman's classic album with John McLaughlin - with the band Chenenko, whose members are stalwarts of the Jazz 825 collective: Dave Whiting (gtr), Tony Gooderham (pno), Dominic Howles (bass) and Trevor Taylor (drums).

This exciting project brings us music of outstanding provenance, in the hands of a contemporary master…
