About the Event
Black Codes (from the Underground) is the 1985 album by Wynton Marsalis, his fourth for Columbia , which won two Grammy awards, including Best Jazz Album. Its six tunes are complex, powerful compositions by Marsalis himself (with one by Kenny Kirkland).
Today, the band Black Codes will interpret this material in their own way: the band builds on previous performances of the album led by pianist Jonathan Gee in London, with the outstanding Paul Higgs taking the trumpet role on this occasion. Brilliant Essex tenor sax man Zak Barrett also joins the line-up, with Dominic Howles on bass and Trevor Taylor at the drums.
