About the Event

Inner Space’s exciting line-up features saxophonists Xhosa Coleand Dee Byrne. Already making waves on the scene with their own groups, their joining Inner Space opens up the music in new directions on its long trajectory of jazz improv combustion.

Inner Space plays jazz with a rare warmth and immediacy. Speyer’s compositions for the band combine references from New Orleans, through Bebop to Free Jazz. Each piece evolves its own form, its own balance of structure and freedom and its own atmosphere. There are audible echoes of Mingus, Monk, Ornette and more - but the key is the immediacy of the playing, with these five highly distinctive musicians working it all out in the Here and Now. Inner Space has been playing Speyer’s “jazz portrait” compositions, dedicated to particular Free Jazz innovators, with titles such as: Innate Ornette, Sun the One Ra the Far, Chimes for Grimes, Even Stevens - provoking some great improvisation.

"Nobody writes world music quite like Loz Speyer, and he’s long deserved a bigger stage..."

John Fordham, The Gaurdian

"The integrity they bring to the emerging free jazz push-pull structure of ’Space Music’ pilots the musicians further towards destinations unknown."

Philip Clark, Jazzwise
