About the Event

1959 is often referred to as jazz's annus mirabilis, during which a number of highly significant albums were released, including Miles' Kind of Blue, Ornette's The Shape of Jazz to Come, Dave Brubeck's Time Out and - the subject of this afternoon's session - Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um. Dave Manington's sextet will perform this important album in the Mingus canon, which contains some of his best known compositions such as his tribute to Lester Young, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, and the civil rights protest Fables of Faubus, (lyrics not included due to Columbia's censorship).

With Dave at the bass, the band is completed by Jamie O'Donnell (alto), Jac Jones (tenor), Owen Dawson (trombone), Rick Simpson (piano) and Tim Giles (drums).
