About the Event

Mark McQuillan is a talented bassist and composer whom we have invited back for his second appearance at the JCUK, having previously performed here with Loz Speyer’s fine quintet. A recent graduate from the Guildhall School in London, Mark was mentored by musicians such as Tom Farmer, James Maddren and Scott Stroman.

Drawing on a wide range of influences including Joshua Redman, Bill Evans and Stephen Sondheim, this quintet project combines Mark’s original music and lyrics with the talents of some of the best young improvisers in the UK.

In particular, the group brings the remakable talents of vocalist Rebecka Edlund to the JCUK for the first time. Rebecka's background is in Swedish folk song, but she has developed an extraordinary repertoire of sounds that echo the natural world: check out some of her performances on YouTube. A  recent performance with Corrie Dick's Sun Swells band in Cambridge saw an audience spellbound by her vocal inventiveness.

Joining Mark and Rebecka are Aaron Carpenter (drums), Dom Howard (guitar), and the first euphonium player to grace our stage, Cameron Scott: this unique lineup gives rise to new and exciting instrumental combinations and improvisational avenues.
