About the Event
Bruce Adams – Dave Newton Duo
A welcome return to The Jazz Centre for two of Britain’s top jazz musicians: Scotland’s finest, Bruce Adams and Dave Newton.
Multi British Jazz Award winner, trumpeter Bruce Adams began his career in Scotland in the early 1980s working with Americans including Dick Hyman and Benny Carter, before moving to London in 1989 to freelance. Thereafter he worked as an in-demand soloist (notably with Pete Long's Echoes of Ellington orchestra), and as guest soloist with a plethora of big bands.
In 1992 he formed a poll winning quintet with saxophonist-composer Alan Barnes; a partnership which continues today. When not working with Alan, Bruce’s other regular partners have included singers Elaine Delmar and Val Wiseman and as a soloist he leads his own quartet for jazz festivals all over the UK.
Dave Newton has won best UK Jazz Pianist at the British Jazz Awards no less than sixteen times. No wonder since he had a musical upbringing with the piano sound of Peterson, Tatum or Garner an ever-present feature in the Newton household. He graduated musical college in 1979 and rapidly became a much sought-after pianist teaming up with Alan Barnes, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller. He has a reputation as an exquisite accompanist for singers, including ten years travelling the world with Stacey Kent. This Saturday, though, with Bruce Adams, it is a meeting of jazz equals. “There is always more to Newton’s playing than first meets the ear. The surface may be smooth, but there are all kinds of clever, subtle things going on beneath”.
