About the Event
Jakub Klimiuk is a young Polish guitarist whose quintet played a very well received gig here in 2023; the band makes a welcome return today, having now released their first full length CD, (un)balanced, which London Jazz News called 'a thoroughly absorbing set'.
The quintet combines modern jazz with influences from Scandinavian improvised music, Eastern European folk and contemporary classical pieces. The resultant repertoire, consisting of original compositions, is a highly energetic mix of scripted forms and improvisation, drawing from various genres but at the same time staying deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
Leadder Jakub took his original inspiration from classic Miles Davis recordings and an early live encounter with John Scofield; completing his jazz studies in Gdansk, he moved permanently to London in 2022 to study at the Guildhall, and to benefit from 'the mix of cultures, different styles and musical genres on the London scene... and the really high level of musicianship which motivates me to develop my skills'.
This is a young band that has maintained the same personnel over several years and two recordings, developing a distinctive style and identity.
