About the Event
During her 30 year career, vocalist Louise Cookman has worked with many different bands (she cut her teeth in the mid-nineties with Ken Mackintosh),  but she is perhaps best known as one of the UK’s leading big band and swing era vocalists. Her ability to recreate the sound of big band vocalists such as Helen Ward, Helen Forrest and Marion Hutton has established her as a leading exponent of the style, and over the years she has worked with Ken Peplowski and the BBC Big Band, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, and James Langton’s Solid Senders, as well as assuming the mantle of Martha Tilton for Pete Long’s acclaimed tribute to Benny Goodman and providing vintage style vocals for various television programmes.
For her visit to the Jazz Centre Louise will celebrate the female band singers of the swing era, exploring the specific vocal style of the 30s and how these women contributed to the huge success of bands such as those of Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.
