About the Event

Tony Compton – accordion

Tim Huskisson – clarinet

A welcome return to The Jazz Centre UK for Tony Compton and Tim Huskisson. Veteran master of the jazz accordion Tony Compton played a delightful and very popular show here last year, with Tim Huskisson on clarinet, , and he's back today for more of the same fine, swinging music.

The accordion has been regarded as something of a Cinderella instrument in jazz. Nevertheless, in the hands of a maestro such as Tony Compton, it can be as expressive as any piano or reed instrument. More readily associated with a plethora of popular styles around the globe, from Eastern Europe to north and south America, from Japan to Africa, the accordion has always had some superb jazz practitioners: just in Britain we should mention Jack Emblow -Tony’s long-time sparring partner- George Shearing, Tito Burns and an outstanding contemporary practitioner, Karen Street.

After playing the accordion for over seven decades alongside the likes of Vic Ash, Don Weller and Tubby Hayes, these days Tony chiefly spends his time teaching, giving only the occasional performance.  Accompanied by Tim Huskisson on clarinet, this Saturday the Jazz Centre gives you a second opportunity to hear an accordion maestro. If you missed the gig last summer, make sure to attend this February.
