About the Event
John Mumford Presentation:
On the Road with Bruce Turner’s Jump Band
Bruce Turner formed his Jump Band in March 1957 following his departure from the Humphrey Lyttelton Band where he had been playing since 1953. He wanted a different sound, one that reflected the tight-knit, highly organised sounds of the John Kirby, Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges small groups.
John Mumford was the trombonist in Bruce Turner’s Jump Band from 1959 to 1961; these were two successful years of touring and recording, which became the subject of the documentary film, Living Jazz. Directed by Jack Gold, financed and produced by Doug Dobell, it was a ground-breaking study of the real jazz world, and still one of the finest jazz documentaries ever made.
The event will open with the track Blues for Lester from the album Accent on Swing, with a sumptuous trombone solo from John. John will then talk about his Jump Band years, in discussion with Digby Fairweather, offering his personal reminiscences and anecdotes.
A screening of the documentary Living Jazz will end the day’s proceedings.
This will be a unique opportunity to hear first-hand about life as a working musician in one of the heroic periods of British jazz, and about one of this country’s legendary bands.
