About the Event
Alto saxophonist Martin Speake has a wealth of collaborations with international jazz figures, and original projects, to his credit- last year we welcomed his band Charukesi here, which explored Indian and Arabic influences.
During lockdown, Martin amused himself by transcribing some 80 Ornette Coleman tunes, and it is this rich legacy which he will examine today at the JCUK. Coleman is perhaps a somewhat neglected figure: tributes to Miles and Coltrane abound, but that's hardly true of Ornette. His influence is heard everywhere, though, and he is one of the foundation stones of modern jazz.
