About the Event
Born in Durham, JO HARROP cut her teeth as a session singer working with iconic pop artists including Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and Gloria Gaynor before moving to London to follow her vocation as a jazz singer. "When I was a teenager" she says " - my dad took me to see Tony Bennett in Newcastle and I was so moved and inspired I realised that I needed to sing". Her recent album 'Weathering the Storm' (with guitarist Jamie McCredie) garnered fine reviews from The Guardian who dubbed it: 'a little gem:simple modest and perfect' and the much respected musician-commentator Dave Gelly added:"This North-East's duo's debut captivates from beginning to end'.
For this session Jo is joined by tenorist AL NICHOLLS. A saxophonist who digs deep into the classic traditions of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Illinois Jacquet, Al's long-respected group 'Blue Harlem' is one of Britain's best-loved (and most musically exciting) ensembles which - like Al's playing - concentrates on the big band traditions of Count Basie and his Swing contemporaries.
Their rhythm section combines the five-star talents of TED BEAMENT (piano) SIMON READ (bass) and ROD BROWN (drums)
Tickets entry: £13.
