About the Event
This week is the first anniversary of the death of Carla Bley, the greatest jazz composer and arranger since Gil Evans and one of the most significant and individual figures in the last 60 years of our music. To mark the occasion, we are pleased to present a talk by Dave Jago, the trombonist, who recently played an afternoon of Carla's music here at the JCUK with the sextet Mandala. Dave has spent a great deal of time transcribing and arranging Carla's music for the sextet: who better to offer an appreciation of her music? The talk will be followed by a short film: The Carla Bley Band live at the Antibes Jazz Festival, in July 1982. The band at that time featured the great trombonist Gary Valente, and alto man Steve Slagle, amongst others.
