About the Event
Torus was one of the best-known Essex Jazz groups that worked in the area and the North London Circuit around the eighties. It featured one of the UK’s finest pianists in Pete Jacobsen, but after he died in 2002 the band decided to take a rest. However, in 2011 they all came together for a short revival tour with the great Jonathan Gee replacing Pete. It was so successful they carried right on and were working regularly right up to lockdown. So, this is the first gig since then.
The group plays an eclectic mix of rarely played material from the 80's from such luminaries as Steps Ahead (Grolnick, Mainieri, Brecker), Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. One of Torus’ star sidemen is the great tenorist Gary Plumley – a longterm player on the Southend jazz scene – who makes a welcome return to his hometown for this extra-special reunion. (Trevor Taylor/ March 2022)
