About the Event
Award-winning saxophonist SIMON SPILLETT (BBC Jazz Awards, British Jazz Awards) presents a unique look at the work of British jazz legend Tubby Hayes.
Author of the acclaimed biography of Hayes— ‘The Long Shadow of The Little Giant’ (Equinox Publishing, 2015), Spillett has long been on the inside track of his subject's life and work, but since the publication of his book a host of new information has come to light, some of it only recently discovered in Hayes' own archive.
Saturday’s presentation includes discussion of some of this material, as well as Spillett’s general reflections on his twenty-plus years researching the life of a legend, which also encompasses other aspects pertaining to British jazz during the 1950s to 1970s.
He will also look at the surprising rediscovery of this fascinating era by a new generation of listeners. (www.simonspillett.com)
“Spillett's knowledge of every note played and every move that his subject made are exemplary for a jazz historian and his writing is full of incident, drama, humour and pathos.”—Morning Star
