About the Event
V-Discs: The Sounds that sent Jazz Global. An illustrated talk by Michael Deakin in The JCUK Media Centre.
In Autumn 1941, jazz was plunged into chaos as young American musicians were drafted and despatched to fight in the Second World War. When key music unions added a recording ban, it seemed that jazz faced an existential challenge. Identifying music as a key to maintaining morale, the US Army Special Services Division negotiated a unique deal, and developed an indestructible distribution medium. The V-Disc was born. Admission £5. Tickets now available from The Jazz Centre.
